It’s Cabernet Sauvignon day today and although it’s not our specialty, we thought this would be a perfect opportunity to let you know a little more about Cabernet Sauvignon in Austria.

In 2009, Cabernet Sauvignon made up approximately 1.3% of the annual production – about 590 of the roughly 46,000 hectares of vine in the country. This is a fairly large increase from years passed; however, it is likely that Cabernet Sauvignon will only ever make up a very small percentage.

Cabernet Sauvignon first arrived in Austria from Bordeaux in the mid 1800’s and has seen increasing success here throughout the years. Cabernet Sauvignon in Austria is most commonly used in the country’s elite cuvée’s, blended with Merlot, Zweigelt and/or Blaufrankisch. The grapes are picked at the peak of its ripening period and, most often, spend time in oak barriques as it is viewed as essential to bring out and exemplify the grape’s natural character.

Cabernet Sauvignon is found in small quantities throughout the country – keep an eye out for it, it’s a rare, but delicious find!
