Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and in the midst of the flowers and the chocolates, you cannot forget the sparkling wine!
In Austria, sparkling wine is generally known as Sekt, which is simply an indication of sparkling wine in German-speaking countries. You may be familiar with German Sekt, and if you are, you may also know that it is often made from grapes sourced from outside of the country and that most vinified using the tank method. Austrian Sekt, however, is made only from grapes that are grown within Austria and, often, will be made using the traditional method, though the tank method is also used here.
The Weinviertel region of Austria is particularly noteworthy for its production of sparkling wines as it is able to provide ideal, high-acid, fruity base wine which is a perfect flavor profile! There are also several niche sparkling wines grown throughout the country, such as Styria, that offer a wine representative of the region.
Most often, Sekt in Austria is made from Grüner Veltliner, Welshriesling, Riesling, or Sauvignon Blanc. Like the other wines of Austria, Austrian Sekt can often be very dry, though sweeter examples also exist. As a general rule, Austrian Sekt can be easily paired with foods such as smoked or grilled fish, cheese, or light meats such as poultry and pork. As a Valentine’s Day rule, we recommend oysters with the whites, chocolate dipped strawberries with the roses, and a whole lot of love to go around.
