Last week marked the biggest celebration of Austrian Riesling in the US to date spanning across two major cities, Chicago and New York, and several days in the Summer of Riesling’Ode to Austria festival!

During that time we paired cheese from the famed Murray’s Cheese Shop with several flights of Austrian Riesling at Hearth, paraded down the Highline in dirndls, took over Chicago’s culinary scene with a series of wine dinners at eight of the city’s top restaurants, sampled Chicago’s and NYC’s elite wino’s at retail shops, took over the Open Secret Studio’s in an acid-filled dance extravaganza, tasted top industry people on Austrian Riesling at the newly opened City Winery, sang along to the Sound of Music at Julius Meinl Cafe, and offered NYC industry people a taste of Austrian Riesling and more at Ost Cafe and later, Edi & the Wolf.

So how did it all go? Swell, of course. Would you expect anything less? Read on for more specific details on each event.

Austrian Riesling & Murray’s Cheese tasting at Hearth Restaurant: Over 20 consumers gathered at Hearth late-night (10pm) for a special pairing of Austrian Riesling with cheeses from Murray’s Cheese Shop. The flights of wine were led by Paul Grieco, Overlord of Riesling, and Elizabeth of Murray’s Cheese Shop explained each pairing.

Dirndl Temptation Promenade on the Highline: We jumped on the dirndl bandwagon of the Austrian Tourist’s Office Dirndl Temptation. Despite a miserably rainy day, over 40 lovers of traditional Austrian attire gathered on the Highline at Terroir The Porch for a taste of Austrian Riesling with special guest, Elisabath Hirschbuechler, Austrian Wine Queen! Watch the video for more insight!

Chicago Wine Dinners: Friday, August 17th, in Chicago was a festival of Austrian food and wine like never before! Eight of Chicago’s top locations participated in a city-wide initiative to fill the masses with wine and schnitzel….and a variety of other perfectly paired dishes put together by top chefs. Special thanks to: BluebirdLeopoldGageRootstockSepiaTelegraphUrban Union, and Webster Wine Bar!

Brunch at the Publican Restaurant: Brunch was taken over at The Publican Saturday and Sunday The Publican offering diners the Austrian fare paired with scrumptiously acidic Austrian Riesling. Dishes included things like Publican pork schnitzel & waffle with a bright 2010 riesling of Loibner, Austria…our mouths are watering just thinking about it!

Retail tastings in Chicago & NYC: Chicago’s wine-lovers had the opportunity to taste a variety of Austrian Rieslings at two of the city’s top retails spots: Red & White and the Wine Discount Center. Over one hundred eager consumers were sampled and lots of bottles of wine were bought! Needless to say, the crowd liked what they tasted! New York City’s 67 Wine & Spirits welcomed Austrian Wine Queen Elisabeth Hirschbuechler and our very own wine goddess, Stephanie Artner, Monday afternoon who sample several eager Upper West Side wine consumers on a sampling of the great selection 67 Wines has to offer!

All-You-Can-Drink Riesling Dance Party: Our open bar, warehouse party welcomed Open Secret Studios to the Chicago dance scene! A selection of Austrian Riesling was offered in unlimited amounts to eager guests who danced to the musical stylings of  DJ’s DJ ISH and DJ CATIEO for four straight hours

Industry tasting at City Winery Chicago: The Austrian Riesling industry party also welcomed a new venue to the scene: Chicago’s City Winery. Owned and operated by the same City Winery owners we love from New York City, the beautiful venue welcomed eager industry tasters from 5-7pm Sunday evening. Wines were featured from across the country and tasters pleasantly sipped and swirled alongside their peers and dirndl-clad Riesling-promoters. Paul Grieco, decked out in his own pair of lederhosen, even recited his very own Ode to Austria for us!

Julius Meinl Cafe Sound of Music Screening: We have to admit, we have a soft spot for musicals – especially those that are all about our favorite country…Austria!  Attendees were offered a free tasting of four Rieslings (in unlimited quantities) and a plethora of bites from Julius Meinl Cafe including finger sandwiches, skewers, and to-die-for pastries as they sang along (and even danced) to the Sound of Music. What a way to spend a Sunday evening!

Ost Cafe tasting event: Though this wasn’t entire Riesling, we welcomed in Ost Cafe’s new by-the-bottle program in a three hour tasting event for New York’s Industry folk and friends of Ost cafe. A wonderful selection of Austrian wine was poured as we tattooed everyone in site with “Riesling.” Food catered from Edi & the Wolf was also enjoyed making it an evening to remember!

Edi & the Wolf late-night industry party: It was the party-to-end-all-Riesling-parties….held at 10pm on Monday evening we offered NYC’s trade and press the chance to sample over 30 different SKU’s of Austrian Riesling while the mixed and mingled inside NYC’s top Heurigen restaurant!  Needless to say it was a full house!
