Sekt: word used in German-speaking countries to describe quality sparkling wine as defined by the European Union. (source: Oxford Companion to wine.)

We’ve all had sparkling wine, but have you had sekt? More importantly, have you had sekt from Austria? This catch-all term can be confusing for consumers who have had generic bottles from other German speaking countries, but Austria is all about the quality bubbly!

Maslow 6 Wine Bar, in conjunction with KW Selection, wants to show NYC that this week as part of the “Welcome back to Tribeca/NYC” week hosted by Kerri Kunzle! (In the event you didn’t spend most of your time gallivanting in the Hamptons or somewhere else exotic, you’re welcome to come too!)

Each night the team will feature a different sekt producded by Weingut Steininger, a family-run winery Steininger is situated in the wine growing village of Retz in the Kamp Valley with just 35 ha of land. They are well-known for the production of a range of styles of Grüner Veltliner as well as their sparkling wines (sekt) all made in the traditional method! Winemaker Karl Steininger puts a special focus on sparkling wine emphasizing his passion for the beverage in 10 different styles!

From Tuesday-Saturday of this week, a FREE taste of sekt  will be offered to customers with the option to purchase a full glass or a flight of up to three different sekts! Tasters will also have the opportunity to enter for a chance to win a bottle of sekt signed by the Steininger family by tasting all 5 sekts and getting your special “sekt passport” stamped! You’ll be issued a Sekt Passport on your first visit and each sekt you try over the course of the week will earn you a stamp- the free taste counts too!

Featured sekts will include: Riesling, Gruner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc,  Burgunder blend, and Pinot Noir (red sekt!).
