The international Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW), based in London, has announced the names of the latest recipients of the Master of Wine (MW), the most prestigious title in the world wine sector. Amongst them is the first Austrian since 2009 to achieve this title – Andreas Wickhoff MW has joined the exclusive circle of 300 international wine experts who are qualified for the highly venerated acronym following their names.

Only three people have achieved the MW title this year. Each has successfully completed several years of education and training in wine production, wine marketing and the wine sector overall while at the same time acquired extensive knowledge of the taste of wines from around the world. In order to be awarded with the MW title, also a final dissertation on a controversial subject in the wine sector is required.

Andreas Wickhoff MW has been the managing director of Premium Estates of Austria, which represents internationally some of Austria’s most renowned winemakers, since 2004. In 2005, he completed his WSET diploma education and graduated as a Weinakademiker from the Weinakademie Österreich (Austrian Wine Academy) in Rust, Austria. He began his Master of Wine studies in 2008.

“It is an overwhelming feeling to have completed these studies now,” says Andreas Wickhoff MW. “I think that achieving the MW title is comparable to a winemaker producing the greatest vintage. Everything had to come together perfectly. And only with the unlimited support of my family, friends and the winemakers I was able to achieve this goal in life.”

Wickhoff devoted his MW dissertation to an important subject in today’s Austrian wine sector:‘Districtus Austriae Controllatus: opportunities and challenges of transforming a Germanic into a Romanic appellation system’.

“It’s great that a sales professional from Austria – one who has done a brilliant dissertation on our DAC-origin marketing – has now made the final hurdle of the Olympus of wine,” says Willi Klinger, managing director of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board. Andreas Wickhoff MW joins two other Austrians who have achieved the MW title: Josef Schuller MW (1998), managing director of the Weinakademie Österreich, and Roman Horvath MW (2009), estate manager of Domäne Wachau.

Says Josef Schuller MW, the head of the Weinakademie Österreich: “As the fifth Master of Wine from the ranks of our local and international Weinakademiker, Andreas continues the success story of our graduates from all over Europe. The wine academic family is pleased with him and is proud that yet another MW has come from the lecture halls of the Weinakademie Österreich.”
