The 12 Days of Austrian Wine begins!

This Christmas we will be raising our glasses to “Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC”, which is the latest addition to Austria’s region-typical quality wine appellations and also the reason why this year’s Christmas video was filmed in a Viennese “Heurigen” or traditional wine tavern.

The past few years have seen the Wiener Gemischter Satz boom in terms of quality and popularity, and it is now served in some of the world’s best restaurants. Similarly, a heightened emphasis on wine culture in the Viennese “Heurigen” has led to Vienna’s wine taverns experiencing a revival and gaining recognition on the Viennese culinary scene.

Art and culture have always played a defining role in the history of the Viennese “Heurigen”. Major influences have included protagonists of the “Wienerlied”, a song genre which has its roots in Vienna, traditional folk music, actors and actresses, artists and internationally renowned musicians alike.awmb christmas

This year we asked a quartet of musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to perform and record a piece of music which they felt best expresses the essence of Wiener Gemischter Satz. The scene is set in the very house on Pfarrplatz in Heiligenstadt in which Beethoven lived during the summer of 1817. It was here that he started composing his 9th symphony.

The musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra chose Antonín Dvořák’s Cypresses – No.11 “Nature lies peaceful in slumber and dreaming”. The fact that Wiener Gemischter Satz reminds them of this piece shows that a touch of Bohemia is present in the Viennese character.

Merry Christmas from Wines of Austria

P.S. Andreas Großbauer, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s first violinist, and three of his colleagues have a passion for pairing classical music with Austrian wine. Tokyo, Toronto, New York and Seoul are just a few of the cities where “Philharmonic Taste” has wowed audiences at their dinner concerts.
