The competition was stiff Monday morning in San Francisco as 20 of San Francisco’s best and brightest sommeliers went head-to-head for the change to take home the grand prize – a coveted spot on the biennial Austrian Wine Summit happening in May 2019. Check out the contestants here.

A 41 question test covering a wide array of topics including climate, grapes, soils, laws, history, and even identifying the incorrect pieces on the wine list was no way to “ease” into the week. Still, this impressive group of sommeliers and professionals did incredibly well and we cannot be more honored that these great minds dedicated so much of their time to studying Austrian wine.

After the rigorous written and blind tasting exam, guest Judges Justin Timsit, the 2016 Austria Uncorked: Best Sommelier of New York, and Andrey Ivanov joined Managing Director of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board, created a mock service exam where the top three contestants were required to further showcase their Austrian wine knowledge including that of regions of producers in a mock sekt service and further wine pairing questions.
